THE TOY CAR MELTDOWN
When “Your Kid Can’t Ride That” Allegedly Turned Into “I Have a Gun.”
There are some arguments that should never leave the “Okay, whatever” stage.
Your kid can’t play with the toy?
Fine.
The store has a rule?
Fine.
You don’t like the rule?
Take your business somewhere else.
Apparently, according to police and court documents, one Indianapolis shopping trip took a dramatically different turn.
And that’s how a disagreement over a motorized children’s toy car allegedly ended with a handgun being pulled inside a children’s store.
Welcome to this week’s FBJ of the Week.
🚗 IT STARTED WITH A TOY CAR
According to police, 21-year-old Tamya Staten went to a Once Upon a Child store in Indianapolis with her toddler to sell clothing.
While employees were handling the transaction, her child began playing with a small motorized toy car.
An employee reportedly told Staten that children weren’t allowed to play with the toys because of store policy.
At first, police say she acknowledged the rule.
But when the employee reminded her again, things allegedly escalated dramatically. (WKRC)
According to the probable-cause affidavit cited by multiple outlets, Staten allegedly pulled a large black handgun from her purse, tucked it into her leggings, threatened an employee and later pointed the firearm toward employees.
Police say she even continued encouraging her child to play with the toy.
That’s one hell of a response to a store policy. (Law & Crime)
🤦♂️ LET’S REVIEW THE OPTIONS
The store says:
“Your child can’t play with the toy.”
Normal responses include:
Option A: “Okay.”
Option B: “That’s ridiculous. We’ll leave.”
Option C: “Can I buy the toy?”
Option D: Leave the store and never come back.
Then there’s the alleged:
Option E: Pull out a firearm.
Ma’am…
E was not the answer.
🚨 AND THEN CAME THE POLICE
An employee reportedly activated a silent holdup alarm.
By the time officers arrived, Staten had left with her child.
Investigators later used surveillance footage, a vehicle license plate and identification Staten had provided to the store to identify her, according to reports.
She has since been charged with felony intimidation with a deadly weapon and pointing a firearm at another person.
An arrest warrant was issued, and the latest reporting said she had not yet been arrested.
If convicted of both charges, she could face up to 8½ years in prison. (WKRC)
And just to be absolutely clear:
Being charged is not the same as being convicted.
But the alleged sequence of events is still unbelievable.
🌐 INTERNET REACTS
Once the story started circulating, the internet predictably went into full roast mode.
The general reaction?
“All this over a toy car?”
People joked that the store’s “no playing with the toys” policy apparently became the most dangerous sentence ever spoken in a children’s consignment shop.
Others couldn’t get over the sheer escalation:
Toy car → argument → alleged threat → alleged firearm → police → felony charges.
The internet’s unofficial legal department also appeared to reach a unanimous conclusion:
Walking away was probably the better option.
And then there was the obvious question:
What exactly was the toddler supposed to think was happening?
“Mommy, why did the toy-car argument turn into a felony?”

🤡 THE FBJ LESSON OF THE WEEK
Not every disagreement deserves a response.
Some arguments aren’t even worth raising your voice over.
And absolutely no toy car is worth turning a normal shopping trip into something that could potentially put your freedom at risk.
The employees weren’t fighting over custody.
They weren’t threatening her child.
They weren’t taking her property.
They were allegedly enforcing a store rule about playing with merchandise.
There was an easy solution:
Don’t let the kid ride the car.
Or leave.
That’s it.
💥 FINAL VERDICT
A children’s store should be one of the last places on Earth where employees expect a disagreement over a toy to become a situation involving a firearm.
Yet according to police, that’s exactly how this situation allegedly escalated.
The toddler wanted the toy.
The store said no.
And now the alleged argument has become a felony case.
That’s what happens when somebody forgets one of life’s simplest rules:
